For Conference Paper Presentations

Please note, all the funding opportunities available at UC are based on reimbursement, i.e. you have to pay registration, hotel and travel expenses yourself and request reimbursement within two weeks after the event is over.

GSGA Travel Award: For conferences and research trips, up to $400.  You have to be a member of PSGSA to be eligible for this travel award. Submit request online Travel Request Form by the second Friday of the quarter in which travel is to take place. For travel during breaks in the academic year, request should be made during the quarter preceding the break (in other words, if you travel during Spring Break, you are to submit this form by the second Friday of Winter Quarter). Then, within two weeks from the day after the last day of the conference/event you must submit to GSGA signed and dated GSGA Travel Award Reimbursement Request, with all signatures (member group officer, advisor and department chair, even if funding is ZERO), signed and dated GSGA Travel Award Checklist and signed and dated UC Travel Expense Report (TER) envelope. Fill in the TER only with items for which you have receipts and are requesting to be funded by GSGA (please, do not seal the envelope). Download the information and application forms from the GSGA web site. For questions about GSGA's travel reimbursements, please consult the treasurer of PSGSA before contacting GSGA.

Taft Graduate Student Travel Award for conferences, up to $500: Apply before you attend the conference. For further information on the award guidelines and application deadline, check the Taft web site.

For Dissertation Research

bullet The Charles Phelps Taft Dissertation Fellowship for Ph.D. candidates is a funding opportunity available from the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center. The Fellowship is available for graduate students who have passed their comprehensive exams and been admitted into candidacy, or have made significant progress toward admission. Under the Taft rules, the Department of Political Science has one designated fellowship and a second applicant can compete with applicants from the other Taft departments for six university-wide fellowships. The Graduate Committee nominates the designated and the competitive fellowship. Applications should be submitted to the Department Graduate Committee by February 15. Graduate Student Summer Fellowships: Provides summer stipend support for those who are not on 12 month university appointments.  It includes, but is not limited to, thesis and dissertation research.  Download the application packet (pdf file) from the web site.  For the deadlines for this fellowship, please view the Taft web site.

Taft Graduate Enrichment Award (up to $2,500): This award is designed to support research projects that will significantly advance graduate students' progress toward their degree. Individual or joint applications are accepted. Eligible projects include but are not limited to a travel to a library, archive, or other source of primary research materials, the purchasing of software or data sets, payment for technical services such as video-taping, laboratory analysis, or expenses involved in conducting interviews or distributing surveys. GSGA Individual Research Travel Award (up to $400): This award is designed to support graduate student dissertation research and can be used by graduate students only once during their academic career. Eligible for the award are graduate students who have successfully completed at least one quarter of either a master's or PhD program. A letter for the student's advisor is required, indicating why funding for travel is necessary at that point in the student's research. For further information, check the GSGA web site.

Taft Postdoctoral Fellowships Applicants must have been awarded the PhD during the past five years or have completed all the requirements for the degree by September 1 of the year in which the tenure of the fellowship begins.  Has an annual stipend of $25,000.

Please note that as a general rule, both Taft and GSGA encourage the applicants to seek other funding before applying for funding from them.
