Currently, the Department of Political Science has two partnership programs--Dual Degree Program with the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, Austria and JD-PhD joint degree program with the College of Law at the University of Cincinnati.
Dual Degree Programs with the Diplomatic Academy (DA) of Vienna, Austria
With its 150 years of experience in post-baccalaureate education, the Diplomatic Academy is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Europe. It offers two programs--the Diploma and the Master of Advanced International Studies (MAIS) Programs. The diploma course is a one-year training program in the theory and practice of international relations. This course places equal emphasis on both the academics and the practical side of international relations.
The Master of Advanced International Studies is a two-year program. During their first year, the students are enrolled in the Special Program of International Studies or the Diploma Program. Alternatively, a relevant multi-disciplinary graduate education or professional experience makes students eligible for admission directly into the second year. For further information on the DA program, please visit the Vienna School of International Studies web site.
The Dual Degree Partnership Program with the DA in Vienna has two different tracks--MA and PhD. The MA track provides an opportunity for students admitted into the DA's diploma program to spend one year in Vienna at the Academy and then complete either an MA and transfer credits toward the UC Master's program and, thus, complete the requirements for Master of Arts in Political Science in a total of two years. Alternatively, those who have completed the MAIS program can transfer one year of coursework toward the PhD requirements at UC and complete the all doctoral coursework and comprehensive exams in Cincinnati in two years and, therefore, can be admitted candidacy in less than three years. For further information on the Dual Degree Program with the Diplomatic Academy, contact Professor Harknett.
The JD/PhD Program with the College of Law at the University of Cincinnati
Since 2005 UC offers a joint degree program in Political Science and Law that enables students to complete an MA/JD in four years and a PhD/JD in six years. Jointly administered by the College of Arts & Sciences Department of Political Science and the College of Law, students may spend their first year in either program, their second year in the other college, and their subsequent years completing a combination of seminars and writing projects that satisfy requirements in both colleges. In their final law school year, students may also opt for an externship that will earn credit accepted for the political science degree.
Both programs allow students, whether or not enrolled for joint degrees, to count eight credit hours of cognate elective courses from the other department or college. All law students also have the option of pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Public Opinion and Survey Research offered by the political science department. For further information on the JD/PhD Program, contact Professor Tolley.
